Sufficiency, Balance and Harmony: Ecological Architecture from an Asian Perspective 20 January 2012 Now extended to March 31, 2012 Nakhara Journal Webpage http://www.arch.chula.ac.th/nakhara/home.php Call for papers: http://www.aj.arch.chula.ac.th/en/index.php/CU/index Much of the global negotiations around climate change have been caught between the twin facts that the areas of the world (Europe and North America) that are historically responsible for carbon emissions are now making demands on developing countries, especially in Asia, that have much greater density and poverty than the West. Meanwhile, global development debates have recently included a shifting language towards Asian values such as "sufficiency, balance and harmony." Clearly, green or sustainable architecture is a socio-cultural as well as a technological question, and therefore different global perspectives are necessary to confront the dual challenges of climate change and rapid urbanization. This call looks for essays from architecture, landscape, environmental design and planning scholars which examine the relation between natural resource exploitation and socio-cultural values both historically and in innovative practices today. Essays that look critically at examples of sufficiency, balance and harmony in Asian architecture, design or planning, and how these values play out in contemporary design practices, are of special interest to the editors.
