2012 Value and Virtue in Practice-Based Research Conference

Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 of July 2012

York St John University

Welcome

The next annual conference for practitioner-researchers will take place on the 11 & 12 July 2012 with the theme of 'Articulating our Values & Virtues'. This vibrant two day conference, held at York St John University in the heart of the historic City of York, will be made up of keynote presentations, workshops and individual papers and we sincerely hope you will be able to join us.

Be most welcome to our second annual conference on Value and Virtue in Practice-Based Research. If you are a returning delegate, you return as a friend. If you are attending for the first time, be prepared to join our community of practitioner-researchers who wish to offer their contributions to making the world a more peaceful and productive place.

Our conference has become an established part of the life and times of York St John University. We started it from a commitment to creating a space where practitioner-researchers from all methodological perspectives could come together to talk about their ideas, their work in progress or their completed research projects. In 2011 we hosted 75 delegates who were working in action research, narrative inquiry, appreciative inquiry, grounded theory, and other methodologies, across a range of disciplines as diverse as nurse education to community development to chaplaincy. We enjoyed a feast of presentations that included dance, poetry, conventional papers and informal conversation pieces. We welcome innovative forms of presentation this year too.

Our theme for 2012 is 'Articulating our Values and Virtues' and we encourage you to think about which values inform your research and practices and how and why these may count as virtues; and then to share your ideas so that others may learn with and from you. You may give an individual or group presentation, in whatever form you wish.

As last year, the only conditions around attendance are that you are involved in some kind of work-based research, whether your workplace is a gardening centre, an office, a university, or your home; and that you attend ready to participate and enjoy the learning. All are welcome. If you have something to say for yourself about how you are making sense of your practice through adopting an enquiring approach to what you are doing, then this is the conference for you.

As before, we aim to encourage a supportive, welcoming and kindly atmosphere throughout. We encourage critique, offered in the spirit of support to the person, and commitment to high quality research. We aim to protect the integrity of every participant and to ensure that your attendance at the conference will contribute to your own sense of personal wellbeing and intellectual potential. Responses from our 2011 delegates at Conference Feedback attest to the special spirit and experience of the conference.

We welcome abstracts as soon as possible, and not later than the 15 of March 2012.

Early submissions will be responded to by the 29 February. Later submissions will be responded to by the 30 March. Responses will be sent out as soon as possible to allow you time to organise the details of your visit – please see Submission of Abstracts

As before, the two days of the conference will be made up of workshops, keynote presentations, and individual papers. Further details regarding scheduling will be given as planning progresses.

If you have any questions regarding the organisation of the conference please contact the team and we will respond as soon as possible.

This is a real opportunity for celebration, so come and join us. We look forward to welcoming you once again to York St John University.
