RIBA Aedas Stephen Williams Scholarship call for entries

Applications are now open for the 2012 scholarship!

The RIBA Aedas Stephen Williams Scholarship was established in 2008 thanks to the generous support of Aedas Architects and is offered in memory of Stephen Williams, a past Director of Aedas.

The Scholarship provides £5,000 to support one student for a period of postgraduate studies lasting up to 12 months in the UK or abroad. Aedas will also ensure that a representative from its staff is available to mentor the student throughout the period of their scholarship.

Applicants must:

have graduated from a Part 1 programme validated by the RIBA in the UK

And at the time of application, students must either:

be enrolled in an RIBA-validated Part 2 professional qualification, and will be starting the final year in September 2012 OR

be enrolled, or have been granted a placement offer, on a Masters course related to architecture (non-RIBA Part 2) in a university department that also offers courses validated by the RIBA.

About the scholarship

The scholarship, named in Stephen Williams's honour, serves as an appreciation of his tireless devotion to the profession. Stephen was a strong advocate for good design and thoughtful consideration of the built environment. Always committed to promoting education and further knowledge, the award serves to continue his legacy.

Joseph Deane from the Royal College of Art was awarded the 2011 scholarship to complete his MA in Architecture (RIBA Part II).

On awarding the scholarship, David Simister, Creative Director at Aedas and chair of the judging panel said that Joseph's work 'uniquely demonstrates an interest in the broad aspects of design and presentation with a fascination for detail and construction'.

Joseph gained a first class Honours for his RIBA Part I from the University for the Creative Arts Canterbury. He was nominated for the President's Medal for his final-year design project and won the department's dissertation and portfolio awards.

Following his undergraduate study Joseph went on to work for Ash Sakula Architects in London and later for Grimshaw Architects in Melbourne, before returning home to complete some freelance design, construction and fine art projects - focusing on cross-disciplinary collaboration, craftsmanship and social community initiatives.

At the RCA Joseph continues the extra-curricular work that he began during his studies at Canterbury; organising a new student-led lecture series at the college, while also acting as a student representative.

In 2010 the RIBA Stephen Williams Scholarship was awarded to Henry Fisher, who received funding to complete his Part 2 studies at the University of Bath during the academic year 2010/11.

In 2009 the inaugural RIBA Stephen Williams Scholarship was awarded to Laura Collins, who received funding to complete her Part 2 Studies at the University of Sheffield during the academic year 2009/10. Laura describes the impact the scholarship has had on her career:

'I feel extremely honoured to have won the award which supported me financially and allowed me to capitalise on a number of opportunities which served to enhance the final year of my architectural study. The support of Aedas, particularly David Simister [Creative Director at Aedas], who provided enormously helpful comments and advice in his role as mentor, formed the backdrop to my design work and I cannot underestimate its significance to me during my final year of study at the University of Sheffield.

Since completing my Part 2 studies I have moved to London amidst a difficult economic climate but have been successful in securing job opportunities with several firms, which I am certain, is thanks to my extensive work experience and self-motivated attitude both within and outside the university studio life. Aedas have continued to offer me both career advice and work opportunities during my time working in London and this pays testament to the significant role that the scholarship has played in my life these last few years.

The network of opportunities that the scholarship has opened up to me has been fantastic and I would encourage any architecture student to apply for similar funding schemes organised by the RIBA Education Department.'

Much of the global negotiations around climate change have been caught between the twin facts that the areas of the world (Europe and North America) that are historically responsible for carbon emissions are now making demands on developing countries, especially in Asia, that have much greater density and poverty than the West. Meanwhile, global development debates have recently included a shifting language towards Asian values such as "sufficiency, balance and harmony."

Clearly, green or sustainable architecture is a socio-cultural as well as a technological question, and therefore different global perspectives are necessary to confront the dual challenges of climate change and rapid urbanization. This call looks for essays from architecture, landscape, environmental design and planning scholars which examine the relation between natural resource exploitation and socio-cultural values both historically and in innovative practices today. Essays that look critically at examples of sufficiency, balance and harmony in Asian architecture, design or planning, and how these values play out in contemporary design practices, are of special interest to the editors.

Design Challenge:

Passive House Bulgaria challenges the architectural community to design a schematic design proposal for an affordable, low energy, single-family houses, focus the public attention to this new type of energy efficient buildings, and promote the design and construction of Passive Houses in Bulgaria. Designs should demonstrate that the passive houses can be affordable and beautiful.

Design a house in the village of Lozen, located in the suburbs of Sofia that is economical and has extremely low energy consumption. Setbacks for the front and back must be 5 m (16 ft) sides 3 m. (10 ft). The design must have a treated floor area of 120-180 м². (1,292 – 1,938 sq. ft) - It must include a living room, dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms (min.), one full bath, one half bath, or two baths. The project teams may choose the orientation of the house. The use of sustainable concepts, including innovative technologies and methods that lead to additional savings of energy and natural recourses, pollution neutralization concepts, use of local and recycled materials are beneficial for your design. The design proposal should strive to achieve the Passive House Standard as follows:

Annual heating and cooling requirement ≤ 15 kWh/m2/year

Primary energy ≤ 120 kWh/m2/year

Airtight building shell ≤ 0.6 ACH @ 50 pascal pressure, (well-detailed construction)

Thermal bridge free construction ≤ 0.01 W/mK

Provided Materials (they can be requested by completing the online registration form):

The Cad file is not associated with any particular site. It is created to satisfy the competition program only. The North arrow has not been located on the CAD file. The contestants are allowed to choose the orientation of the plot.

If any of the individual participants and teams fail to email their choice for favorite project, they will not continue in the next stage of the competition.
The seven projects with the most votes will be included in the top ten finalists.

MPhil Scholarship in Humanities and Social Sciences

St Cross College invites applications for this MPhil Scholarship from students who will begin studying at the University of Oxford in the academic year 2012-2013 for an MPhil degree in any of the humanities and social science disciplines. Applicants must list St Cross College as their first choice college on their Graduate Admissions application in order to be eligible to apply for this Scholarship.

The Scholarship has the value of the annual College fee, currently £2426 per annum for 2011-2012, and is tenable for two years coterminous with college fee liability. Making sense of teaching in difficult times

Journal of Teaching in Higher Education

Thinking about teaching in educational terms has become increasingly difficult because of the conceptions of higher education that predominate in policy and public debate. Framing the benefits of higher education simply as an economic good poses particular difficulties for making educational sense of teaching. Moreover, the assumptions about social mobility, usefulness and the economic advantages of higher education, upon which these conceptions are based, can no longer be taken for granted. This special issue invites contributors to consider understandings of education/teaching and everyday teaching experiences in these changing global, national and institutional contexts.

Contributions might examine and/or contest the significance of these changing contexts for:

l different disciplines and professions

l different types of institutions in which higher education is taking place: for example, in public, private, and hybrid institutions; in teaching- and research-intensive universities

l key policy initiatives such as internationalization and widening participation

l the theoretical and methodological lenses that are used to make sense of teaching in higher education

l the author's experience of teaching, assessment and evaluation

l knowledge, curriculum and student experiences

l the ethics of curricula which foreground individual economic advantage

Contributions are welcome from a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives, and from different cultural contexts. As with all special issues, authors are also invited to challenge the assumptions underpinning this call for papers. We welcome essays, policy critiques and reflective analyses, in addition to more conventional research articles.

Architectural Historian

The successful candidate will work for Tetra Tech and participate in assisting with architectural history and historic preservation projects.

Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
conducting architectural history investigations (survey and evaluation);
conducting historical research;
preparing historic preservation planning documents for the installation;
analyzing project impacts on historic buildings, structures, and districts;
developing and implementing mitigation measures;
coordinating historic resources tasks related to local, state, and federal environmental regulatory processes; and
Implementing the Secretary of the Interior Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Properties.
Project and task management responsibilities include coordination and cooperation with other environmental and engineering departments and project managers.

Qualifications
Candidate must have:
3-5 years previous in architectural history, either consulting or with a federal agency;
strong analytical and writing skills;
ability to work independently as well as in multi-disciplinary teams; knowledge of Section 106, Section 110, and NEPA requirements;
proficiency in architectural analysis and documentation preferred;
prior experience in cultural resources management, including familiarity or proficiency in preparing CEQA and Section 106 documentation, is highly desired; and
Experience working with state Office of Historic Preservation standards and processes also highly desired.

Education Required

Advanced degree in historic preservation, architectural history, architecture, or closely related discipline. Candidate must meet US Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards.

TOPIC – The theme of the conference is designer's practice knowledge. How can the specific knowledge of designers be brought forward, articulated, made visible and be understood and used in contexts like innovation, business development and social change?

We are coordinating a track within the above mentioned EAD conference and are inviting submissions on the topic:

MAKING TOGETHER - Open, Connected, Collaborative

The track will reflect on changes in creativity and production, traditionally seen as the province of professional design but now driving new ways to work, socialise, be creative and live across society. This is informing the emergence of novel design scenarios to create products and services (e.g. personal manufacturing, peer production, fablabs, crowd sourcing, collaborative business models) on many levels: people, companies, organisations, institutions, communities.

Design is challenged with new business models, long tail markets, new networked organisations, diffused distribution, non-technological innovation, that are underpinned by new ways to manufacture and design products and services. Creative practitioners are increasingly working both through direct creative input and through facilitating new processes. Design and creativity can in fact rethink and give meaning to tools and technologies that help people connect, understand, share and create. Design is also taking the position of facilitator and enabler where in the past it was a technological gatekeeper.

Although pervasive, this topic is still emerging and being explored, both from an academic perspective (underlining the theoretical bodies that can help such approach emerge), and from the perspective of practitioners (detailing the development of systemic and collaborative projects). Examples can be found in Service Design, Transformation Design, Open Design. Moreover these phenomena are underlining a revolution in work and human relationships, mirroring a move to more distributed, collaborative processes.

Can collaborative practices trigger new business models and new innovation in products and services? How can collaborative making enabled by social technologies be explored/practiced/developed from a design perspective? What are the implications/benefits/impact of collaborative making for design? How may the boundaries and role of design be re-defined? Can designers design collaborative networks?

The quadrennial joint conference of The Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) and European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) will take place October 17-20, 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark. For the conference we invite papers that address the dynamics and interrelationships between science, technology and society. Papers which address the conference’s theme ‘Design and Displacement’ are especially relevant, but papers on any topic in STS are welcome.

‘Design’ has become a key concept across a multitude of disciplinary domains and social spheres. In addition to its traditional ‘aesthetic’ associations, it is now a key term in multiple scientific domains and in diverse technological practices. One can even think of societies and social arrangements being ‘designed’. In science and technology, ‘design’ implies the re-arrangement of materials and ideas for innovative purposes. When newly designed scientific and technical objects enter the world, however, their initial purposes are often displaced.

For decades, STS researchers have been following the practical and political dimensions of science and technology. By focusing on concepts and practices of scientific and technological design at their sites of construction and on their multiple displacements, the 2012 conference continues this tradition. By bringing together ‘design’ and ‘displacement’ we want to highlight how scientific and technological design engages with existing socio-technical arrangements in both planned and unplanned ways, facilitating both collaborations and contestations, and generating both order and disorder.

The conference encourages analytic, critical, and practical engagement with design and displacement in several ways. First, it points to the need for investigating the relation between design intentions and their displacements, for example as catalysts for change and conflict. It also highlights the importance of investigating design controversies. It locates design practices in broader political contexts, and focuses attention on how design facilitates or hinders social inclusion, locally and globally. The theme ‘Design and Displacement’ invites careful analyses of the way design practices take part in shaping worlds. However, ‘Design and Displacement’ also raises questions around STS as design work and practice-based interventions. In this sense design becomes simultaneously topic and outcome, a situation that raises new questions concerning the role of STS research.

Papers may be submitted individually or by a session organizer. Paper abstracts should be up to 250 words. They should include the main arguments, methodology, and their contribution to the STS literature. The title of papers should be up to 10 words.

New this year, individual papers may be submitted to one or more “Open Panels”. The call for open panel themes received enthusiastic response from the community. 106 panels are available, which have been grouped into 10 subject clusters. Session proposals should be limited to 250 words total, and should contain a theme and a rationale for the session, and a brief discussion of its contribution to the STS community. Session proposals should list a chairperson and names of all session organizers and panelists, including institutional affiliations and (electronic) addresses.

Session proposals should be based on the assumption of 11Ž2-hour time slots with fifteen minutes per presentation. A typical session consists of maximum five papers, one chairperson, and a fifteen-minute open discussion slot. You must have a minimum of three complete paper descriptions in order to submit a session proposal. You can add additional papers to the session up until the submission deadline.

All presenters, including those included in session proposals, must have a user accounts with the submission system. Submitters can create accounts on behalf of their co-authors and session participants, if necessary. Anyone who has participated in a 4S meeting in the last four years should already have a user account.

Mentorship Program

The Mentorship Program has become a popular part of the 4S conference. The goal of the program is to facilitate mentoring of individuals who are new to the conference and/or to 4S. A mentoring relationship assumes a minimum of one conversation at the 4S conference. It is hoped that mentoring relationships will also continue with at least two follow-up phone calls or emails during the following 12 months. We will match new scholars with more experienced scholars and make an effort to assign mentors outside of one's university. We hope that the mentoring project will allow new scholars to feel more at home in the STS community.

Veteran Identities:
One Hundred Years
of the First World War

Special issue of the Journal of War and Culture Studies (autumn/winter
2013):

The end of the twentieth century saw a renewed critical and artistic
interest in cultural representations and memories of the First World War,
reflected in a plethora of films and novels in Britain and France, for
example, a vast range of academic studies, and the creation of several
research centres devoted to this conflict alone. At the beginning of this
century, and as the war passed from living memory into History, nations
became transfixed by the figure of the last veteran. Debates as to how to
commemorate his passing preoccupied both politicians and the press. The
figure of the veteran thus became the figure around which the memory of
this war increasingly crystallised. As its hundredth anniversary draws
near, this issue of the Journal of War and Culture Studies will explore the
ways in which various cultures have portrayed veterans of the First World
War, but also the varied ways in which veterans have represented
themselves. It therefore seeks papers that study the representation of the
First World War veteran or veterans' self-representation from a variety of
nations and cultural source material, including, but not limited to,
literature, memoirs, film, photography, art, music and song. Authors may
want to consider the social or political ends that such representations
serve, as well as the diverse individuals who sought to claim veteran
status, including not only ex-combatants, but also women, non-combatant men
and those mobilised from colonies.

Deadline for receipt of contributions: 1st May 2013.
All articles should be 5,000–6,000 words in length, and follow the
